Cycling Rights, And Howe! [Video]
We featured an article about Monica Howe early last month, Street Safety for Roadies, when she was featured in the Los Angeles Times.
I’ll repeat what I said then: We should all strive to make our cities more bike friendly. Lets get busy, raise our voices, and be heard. We have a right to roads too.
Well, local NBC TV affiliate NBC4 has a new video worthy of your attention:

Wow, they sure do honk a lot down in L.A.
Things might improve in LA if Pico and Olympic Boulevards are turned into one-way streets as a recent LA Times article suggested. Then traffic lights can be sequenced and there are much fewer dangerous turns. You could EASILY allocate one of the six existing lanes as a cycling lane, leaving 5 lanes for cars.
The LA Times removes its articles, so I’ll quote it here:
The italics and boldface are my emphases. Lastly, $200k for bicycle and pedestrian lanes is chump change. You can’t even get 2 innings from a star pitcher for that amount of money.
LA City bike paths are definitely questionable in a lot of areas. But I have to say that I find most, but certainly not all, drivers to be courteous to cyclists. Generally, on a 40 or 50 mile ride, I might have a few drivers who don’t pay attention. But it keeps me on my toes, which is where we all should be as cyclists. If you think about it, a few numbskulls out of thousands you pass on a ride isn’t bad. That said, it would definitely make a difference if the county added a substantial number of bike lanes and made bike/car road sharing a more important part of the driving tests.
Wow, Josh, I find it amazing that you have had such good experiences riding in a big city. I have had nothing but near misses every day, multiple times per day. We really need to suppor the bill that will require motorists to give a bicycle atleast 3 feet of riding space. Be safe,a nd keep the rubber side down.
