Product Review: HydroPak’s Brand New Gel-Bot Water Bottle
So at what point does a water bottle stop being a water bottle? If not now, then we are very close.
As I was walking the floor of the Interbike trade show I was just about to walk past the HydroPak booth thinking nothing here for me. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Gel-Bot. Water bottles used to be considered low tech, but not anymore. In the world of carbon fiber and ceramic bearings, I was surprised that a product named Gel-Bot caught my eye.
What is a Gel-Bot you ask? Well that is exactly what I did too. The answer is that the Gel-Bot is a wide mouth water bottle that has a special lid that has a gel bottle attached to it. Once the lid is put on and tightened the gel container sits inside the bottle. And my second big question was, why would I ever trade in my old reliable team water bottles. Okay, so we can now get aero bottles with carbon cages, and bottles with a wide mouth are the standard now. You can even get a water bottle that is insulated to attempt to keep your drink of choice a few degrees cooler than the stifling summer heat. But the idea of changing what we use a water bottle for, well now, that is interesting.
What HydroPak did was combine two great ideas into one very good product. They took the water bottle, and the gel (think GU) bottle and combined them. And what they came up with is nothing short of brilliant.
So who would this work for? Taking me as the example; I found the Gel-Bot useful on both my triathlon bike, as well as my criterium racing bike. With this bottle I never have to fumble with trying to open up a gel packet again. You know what that means, yes, you are right, no more sticky, gel coated fingers. All you need to do is put two gel packets into the special insert, screw on the lid, and you got your fluid, and your gel in one spout.
I can go on, but I think you get my point. This product works. Ever since I received the GelBot demo bottle, I have used it on every ride, and I have no intention of giving it back. In fact I am going to get another
