Pro Cyclist to Continue Miracle Comeback at Porcupine Hill Climb in Salt Lake City, Utah On July 7, 2007 Saul Raisin Will Ride His First Post-Accident Race
“Saul Raisin may have been an virtual unknown until he had that frightening crash. But he deserves our attention as another example of what is right with Pro cycling. He has the unbelievable will to live, and to continue on his path of living. He should give us all hope that we to can have the power to overcome. This man is a hero!”
On April 4, 2006 during a European stage race, pro-cyclist Saul Raisin suffered a devastating crash that put him into a coma and on the verge of death. The prognosis was so bleak that Saul’s parents were discussing organ donation with his doctors by the time their son woke up. As he gradually regained consciousness Saul’s parents were rocked by another revelation. During emergency surgery a portion of his brain had been removed leaving his left side paralyzed for life.
Throughout his recovery Saul was unwilling to accept such a prognosis, and his determination has made all the difference. The story of his fight to regain full functionality is the stuff of legends, but it doesn’t stop there. Saul dreamed of returning to pro cycling and winning the sport’s most prestigious race, the Tour de France. Saul recently passed a major milestone on that journey when he cleared medical controls and regained his racing license. The next step is to participate in an actual race. He chose the Porcupine Hill Climb for his debut race because his fiancé lives in Salt Lake City. Saul will marry Aleeza Zabriskie in Hawaii this December.
The Porcupine Hill Climb, which starts in front of the Porcupine Pub and Grille (3698 Fort Union Blvd., Salt Lake City, Utah) and finishes at the base of Brighton Ski Resort will be held on Saturday, July 7. Spectators can watch the race at any point along the course up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Citizen racers take the start line at 7 AM. Elite level racers, including Saul, will take off at 8 AM. Coincidentally, at the exact same moment in London many of Saul’s teammates and friends will be powering through the streets of London in the prologue to the 2007 Tour de France. He intends to join them in 2008.
Saul’s new book, Tour de Life: From Coma to Competition (co-authored by Salt Lake City writer Dave Shields), is being unofficially launched in conjunction with the race. Copies will be available for purchase both before and after the event at race headquarters in the Porcupine Pub and Grill parking lot. Saul Raisin and Dave Shields will be on hand for book signings. The book is already receiving widespread acclaim, and will be in stores September 2007.
