Action-Packed Stage
By Paul Sherwen
What a day! I don’t really know where to start because so much happened. Actually, so much happened in the last 11 kilometers of the stage to be exact. I suppose I should start with the battle at the front!
Four leaders started the last climb to the ski resort of Prato Nevoso together and it was hard to pick a winner from them. They were all four of a similar level of talent. Egoi Martinez was probably the best climber so he attacked first and only got rid of José Luis Arietta and got stuck with Danny Pate and Simon Gerrans.
He tried a couple more attacks and couldn’t get rid of either of them, so when it came to the end the Aussie, Gerrans, had the best turn of speed. Neither Pate nor Martinez could match his acceleration and had to settle for the lesser positions.
