Colombian Climber Soler From Team Barloworld Suffers Possible Wrist Fracture
PLUMELEC, France, July 5, 2008 (AFP) - Colombia’s Tour de France ‘King of the Mountains’ Mauricio Soler is a doubt for the rest of the race after a crash on the first stage here Saturday.
Soler, who rides for the British-registered Barloworld team, picked up a suspected fractured scaphoid (bone) in his left wrist and a sprained right wrist in a crash on the chaotic 197.5km first stage from Brest to here.
He plans to make a decision on whether to continue before the start of Sunday’s second stage.
“The scaphoid is a small round bone in the wirsrt and you bcan’t always see if it’s fractured or not after a wrist injury,” the race’s medical officer Gerard Porte told AFP.
Porte will examine the injured rider on Sunday morning and consult with Barloworld’s doctor before giving Soler the green light to continue.
