Experienced Mountain Biker, Inventor Dies at Sea Otter Classic

Monterey, Calif.- It’s the news every cyclist hates to hear. Mark Reynolds, 48, of San Jose died  while riding his bike on a downhill course at the 2008 Sea Otter Classic on Saturday. According to deputies from the Monterey County Sheriff’s office, the cycling enthusiast was riding a downhill course when he crashed into a dirt embankment after jumping off a narrow wooden bridge near the bottom of the course. He sustained severe head and neck injuries and was airlifted by paramedics to Natividad Medical Center where he later died. The accident occurred around 12:30 pm deputies said. Reynolds was the owner of Wiked Racin, a company that makes bike components for all types of off-road cycling. He invented the “dualrailleur”, which is a device that allows for shifting of two front chain rings on freeride and downhill bikes. He was also an avid writer on many mountain bike forums. Family, friends, and the entire cycling community are stunned by Reynold’s untimely death. According to Sea Otter officials, this is the first death in the event’s 17-year history.
