ROME, March 16, 2008 (AFP) - Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara on Sunday won the fifth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico, a 26km time-trial from Macerata to Recanati.

The twice world time-trial champion also took over the leader’s blue jersey following his victory.

The 26 year-old Team CSC rider finished 22sec clear of second-placed American David Zabriskie in a time of 33min 41sec and more than a minute clear of third-placed Italian Enrico Gasparotto.

Gasparotto moved up to second overall, 16sec back, while previous leader Niklas Axelsson of Sweden finished 2min 26sec back and dropped to sixth.
