French dominate early rounds of men’s sprint
MANCHESTER, England, March 27, 2008 (AFP) - Frenchman Kevin Sireau set a new venue record to wow his sprint rivals in the early rounds of the competition at the world track cycling championships Thursday.
Sireau, who helped France to gold in the men’s team sprint ahead of Britain on Wednesday’s opening day, set a time of 9.992sec for the flying last 200 metres to top qualifying.
Dutchman Theo Bos is the reigning world champion but he was left stunned when France’s Gregory Bauge and Mickael Bourgain took second and third place respectively in 10.028 and 10.029.
Bos, the reigning world record holder in 9.772, finished fourth after tying with Britain’s Chris Hoy while up and coming British sprinter Jason Kenny impressed in a time of 10.067.
Reigning Olympic champion Ryan Bayley qualified but finished ninth in 10.126, just ahead of teammate Shane Perkins (10.150) and well ahead of fellow Australian Mark French, 19th in 10.296.
In the ensuing round French was beaten in his match-up with Frenchman Francois Pervis.
There are no repechages rounds in the men’s sprint competition.
