Gerald Ciolek Wins Fifth Stage Of The Tour of Germany
Gerald Ciolek was the surprise winner of the last mountain stage of the Tour of Germany on Wednesday on the 218.4km route from Mainz as team-mate Linus Gerdemann kept the yellow jersey.
Germany’s Ciolek, the 2006 under-23 world champion, won three stages on last year’s tour and attacked on the final steep climb to give his rivals no chance.
Switzerland’s Rubens Bertogliati (Scott) came second with Italian Leonardo Bertagnolli (Liquigas) third in a blanket finish.
The 21-year-old Ciolek covered the course in five hours 39.35 minutes with leader and Team Columbia team-mate Gerdemann of Germany down in 11th position.
