Team Columbia’s Hagen Wins The Seventh Stage As Lequatre Holds Tour of Britain Lead
LONDON, Sept 13, 2008 (AFP) - Team Colombia’s Norwegian cyclist Edvald Boasson Hagen claimed his third stage of the Tour of Britain on Saturday but Frenchman Geoffroy Lequatre held onto the yellow jersey.
Hagen, 21, added victory at Scotland’s Drumlanrig Castle to previous wins at Stoke-on-Trent and Dalby Forest to retain the lead in the Points and Sprints Jersey classifications.
The youngster was one of eight riders who split from the main peloton, but showed the most explosive power to outsprint his rivals in the seventh stage.
Lequatre finished with the main field over two minutes behind but at the same time as nearest yellow-jersey competitors Steve Cummings and Daniel Martin to preserve his six-seconds lead.
The Agritubel rider assessed his chances of overall victory.
“The finish is tomorrow (Sunday), so we will see when I cross the line tomorrow if I have won or not,” he told the tour’s official website. “Today we did a great job and I would like to say thank you for my team.”
