I agree that bike riders need to follow the rules of the road, but only when they make them safer on those roads.

1. Running red lights can be down right stupid, or completely necessary. Think about this one, you pull up to that red light and it never changes. Why, because they put a metal weight sensor in the ground that a bicycle will never trigger. In fact the law in California allows my to go through the red light as long as I am safe, and my bike can not trigger the sensor.

2. Going in front of traffic at a stop light is out of safety. I am much more visible to the first car in line than the 10th. I protect myself from the driver making the right turn at 20mph while I am going 10mph. Self defense my friend. And why would it make a difference, it does not impede car traffic. If you are referring to left hand turns, the same safety factor is applied.

3. Rude, so says you. My safety (without question) is more important than your feelings. How about a little thought shift. Become the driver that gives the bicycle rider not only a little extra room but time. You can then go rushing to where ever you need to get to with the knowledge that you made someones life a little easier. Try it I challenge you. You feel better.

4. Bicycle riders get traffic tickets all the time. Spend some time on the forums and read about all the complaints.

5. Hop on your bike and ride to work for one week, then come back and write to us and let us know how friendly the drivers in your city are. My guess you will not be able to argue the same.

6. I will be happy to help you find ways to become a bicycle advocate in your community.

I live in Colorado, right at the base of the mountains. I'm down for sharing the road, but i dont understand why bikers dont have to obey all of the laws. If they want to be treated as a vehicle, they should follow ALL of the rules of the road, no running red lights, or going in front of traffic at a stop light. it's just rude. They say that they want equal rights, but to get that they should get in just as much trouble for not using arm signals, running red lights, and cutting traffic.
