Candelario Claims Hat trick of Podiums, Team’s Return to Form Continues
Minneapolis, Min., May 7, 2008 — Alex Candelario of Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast pro cycling team climbed his third podium of the week last Sunday at the Crystal City Classic in Arlington, Virginia. His third place finish follows a win at the USA Speed Week Crits in Greenwood and a third place at the Downtown Waterboro Criterium. Along with Keven Lacombe’s third place finish in the Beaufort Stage that puts the KBS/M team on the podium four times in a week and mark! s the co ntinued return to form of Jonas Carney’s second year squad.
“Crystal City was an interesting race,” says Jonas Carney. “We made some last minute strategy shifts from Martin to Alex for the sprint. It almost gave us the win, but we’re happy to be on the podium four times in the last week. Plus our guys are riding aggressively and we’re only going to get stronger as the season continues.”
Key in the final result were Keven Lacombe and Jonny Sundt, who was well placed just ahead of the final lap to take a shot himself, but rode with the rest of the squad to set up first Martin Gilbert and then Candelario as the shift was made.
“It is important that our team can react quickly and change up the plan at such critical points of the race,” adds Carney. “In competitive racing the field can change in a second so it’s crucial to be able to respond rapidly. It’s also a real mark of our team that our guys can start with a game plan, switch strategies and still end up on the podium.”
Next up for the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team is the Bank of America Wilmington, Delaware and the Mt. Hood Stage Race in Oregon the same week, followed by Bike Jam/Kelly Cup in Baltimore, Maryland ahead of Philly Week and a packed second half of the season.
