Lucky Usov wins seventh stage of Tour de Langkawi
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15, 2008 (AFP) - Alexandre Usov of team La Mondiale Friday won stage seven of Malaysia’s Tour de Langkawi while Mitchell Docker of Drapac Porsche emerged as the new overall leader.
The Belarussian’s stage win was due largely to a bad crash involving sprinters Danilo Hondo and Alberto Loddo close to the finish line.
Stage seven of Asia’s biggest race was from Kuala Rompin to Kuantan in central Pahang state, covering 126.6 kilometres (79 miles).
A jubilant Usov won a hard race in 2hrs 52mins 56secs, while Iran’s Maleki Mizan Hassan of Azad University was second and Japan’s Takashi Miyazawa was placed third.
Docker, the new leader overall, finished 31st in the race, while France’s Matthieu Sprick, who previously had the yellow jersey, was 44th, leaving him in second overall.
Saturday’s stage eight — the penultimate stage of the tour — is 127 kilometres from Temerloh to Fraser’s Hill in a race which is likely to decide the overall winner.
The Tour de Langkawi ends on Sunday in the capital Kuala Lumpur.
