Marta Bastianelli Appeals Her 1 Year Doping Ban

Marta Bastianelli of Italy is appealing her one year doping ban to the sport’s highest court today. She is accused of testing positive for a banned stimulant.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has confirmed that Bastianelli, who won the women’s world road race champion in 2007, requested that CAS overturn her suspension by the Italian Olympic committee (CONI) in October.

“The cyclist considers that the substance found in her body was not a stimulant,” CAS said in a statement.

Bastianelli had tested positive for the stimulate that is named flenfluramine at the under-23 European championships in Verbania, Italy, in July. She was then dropped by the Italy team for the Beijing Olympics in August.

The 21-year-old Bastianelli has all along denied that she knowingly took the drug, but acknowledged taking a weight-loss product that most likely contained the banned stimulate.

No date has been set yet for the CAS hearing.
