Matthew Goss Won Stage 1 At Sun Tour After Attack From Stuart O’Grady
On Sunday Matthew Goss won the preface in Herald Sun Tour and on Monday the young Australian followed up with another victory in the 130-kilometer first stage from Traralgon to Inverloch.
The stage was decided in a bunch sprint and Barloworld’s sprinter Baden Cooke took the second place exactly like Sunday.
With this victory Goss also leads the point’s competition in the race and Stuart O’Grady is right behind him in second place. O’Grady was in a solo break for 55 kilometers, where he took the necessary points in the intermediate sprints as well as four bonus seconds, which also places him as fourth overall.
The most important thing was the fact that O’Grady’s attack eased the burden of his teammates during the stage.
“We could just sit there and wait because the other teams did all the hard work in trying to reel O’Grady in. but it was a tough stage though and in the end I was simply delivered perfectly for the finale by Bradley McGee,” said a happy Goss after the stage.
O’Grady’s lead was four minutes at one point and for a while it looked like the 35-year-old Australian rider would actually win, but for the last 40 kilometers there were tough head winds and he had to face the fact that he couldn’t maintain his lead.
“It turned out to be a bit too tough at the end but I had great legs and felt like I had a good chance of launching a decent attack. But the weather was against me so it was too much in the end,” said O’Grady about the day’s events.
