Spain’s 2006 Tour de France champion Oscar
Pereiro will join Lance Armstrong in competing in the Tour Down Under in
Australia next month, officials said Tuesday.
Organizers said it will be the first time that two Tour de France winners
have competed in the 800-kilometer (500-mile) event in South Australia.
“The Tour Down Under is honored to have Pereiro and Armstrong competing at
our event,” race director Mike Turtur said.
“Spectators in Adelaide will get to see some of the best cycling champions
of our time. It’s a great coup for the sport in this region.”
Pereiro will compete for the Caisse d’Epargne team while cancer survivor
and seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong has been confirmed as
launching his comeback at the event.
The Caisse d’Epargne rider roster also includes Luis Leon Sanchez, Jose
Rojas, Pablo Lastras, Nicolas Portal, Imanol Erviti and Mathieu Drujon.
