Top Tour Down Under Team Back For 2009

The team with the best overall record in the Tour Down Under, Ag2r La Mondiale, will race at the event in 2009.

Ag2r La Mondiale is the only team to have competed in all Tour Down Under events (1999-2008) and has achieved the most overall wins.

“It is great news that such a quality team will be competing in Adelaide in January,” said Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur.

“The French Ag2r team has produced the most overall winners of the Tour Down Under, with victories in 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2007.”

The Ag2r La Mondiale overall winners of the Tour Down Under are:
2000 - Gilles Maignan (FRA)
2003 - Mikel Astarloza (ESP)
2006 - Simon Gerrans (AUS)
2007 - Martin Elmiger (SUI)

“We know that the Ag2r team gets results at the Tour Down Under and can consistently perform at cycling’s highest level,” said Mike Turtur.

“Ag2r’s past results at our race prove they are serious contenders and are travelling down under to win.”

The Ag2r La Mondiale rider roster includes: Martin Elmiger (SUI), Sebastien Hinault (FRA), Alexander Efimkin (RUS), Vladimir Efimkin (RUS), Nicholas Roche (IRL), Rene Mandri (EST) and Alexandr Pliuschin (MDA).

“The Ag2r riders gave strong performances during the 2008 season, particularly at the Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana and Paris Nice, and will be a team to watch in Adelaide in January,” said Mike Turtur.

“Rene Mandri is a fast sprinter so will be one to watch during the SA Lotteries Sprints at the Tour Down Under”.

Ag2r La Mondiale’s Team Manager, Laurent Biondi (FRA), is no stranger to the Tour Down Under, having led the team a number of times during the event’s eleven-year history.

The 2009 Tour Down Under will be held in South Australia from 18 – 25 January 2009.
