Bike, Opportunity Lost
By Paul Sherwen
What a great day, the Tour went over the highest road in the Europe. There were two races to follow, the race for the stage and the race for the overall.
In the race for the stage we had our fingers crossed for the youngest rider in the event, John Lee Augustyn of South Africa. He jumped the lead group and got first place over the Col de la Bonnette-Restefond and then looked like he was in with a chance to win the stage.
That wasn’t to be, though, as he exited the road in a dramatic fashion on the lunar landscape descent. He lost his bike and any chance of winning the stage. His problem was that it wasn’t possible to get his bike and he had to wait for a long time before he got a spare bike to finish the race.
