After you lead a stage of the Tour de France for virtually the entire length – and the longest one this year, at that – then you deserve to win. But it does not work that way and French champion Nicolas Vogondy was swept up with about 50 yards to go, being passed by Team Colombia’s Mark Cavendish.
This has been a great beginning for both new American teams – Garmin-Chipotle and Colombia – but the win by the British rider really was the icing on the cake. Cavendish is the ninth British rider to win a stage of the Tour and the youngest at just 23. He really is the fastest finisher in the world over the last 200 yards, as he often reminds us.
