Early Desparation

Without doubt, this was the best stage so far in this year’s Tour de France with the first 50 kilometers providing desperate moments for the field. You could see that as soon as the crosswinds hit the peloton; those caught at the back suddenly found themselves fighting for the wheel in front.

For this reason alone, the fancied riders never got near the back and only Damiano Cunego was caught when he crashed. He found the race, with its angry overtones, and fought to return to the peloton. This is turning out to be a tough ride for the little Italian, who ended the day chasing home in the second group and losing 33 seconds. He has not lost his chance of winning the Tour yet, but he can’t afford any more slips.
