First Taste of the Mountains

The first taste of the mountains in any grand Tour is always hard to predict as the body reacts strangely after pushing the big gears on the flat. The physiological change is always hard to accept — after slugging the big gears on the flat to “twiddling” the small gears on the climbs.
None of the big boys made any moves on the climbs today which is not really a surprise as they seem to be waiting for Hautacam. What we did witness today was the birth of a new climbing star — Ricardo Ricco. Ricco’s attacks were very reminiscent of the attacks of a certain Marco Pantani.
