Up For Grabs
By Bob Roll
There were big changes for the GC at the end of the stage to Prato Nevoso, across the Alps from France into Italy. A big breakaway got away early with Christian Vandevelde’s teammate, Danny Pate finishing third on the stage. It was a great ride by Danny, but he could not match the final acceleration of Simon Gerrans, who won the stage. It was the second stage win for Credit Agricole and an unbelievable result for the young Australian on the French team.
The GC battle was furious in the last couple of kilometers with multiple attacks and a shakeup at the beginning of the day. Of course, it was Evans with a one-second advantage over Schleck. Now, it’s Scheck leading as he gets the first yellow jersey of his career.
