Kazakh cyclist Alexandre Vinokourov, who was kicked off the 2007 Tour de France for doping, was dropped from a Dutch mountainbike event on Friday in what would have been his comeback race.
The 35-year-old was to take part in the Beach Challenge in the Dutch town of Scheveningen, but he was withdrawn from the list of entrants, the ANP news agency reported.
The organizers, who had originally accepted the Kazakh rider into the race, did not give a reason for their change of mind.
Vinokourov was suspended for a year until July this year after his Tour de France expulsion which also saw his Astana team kicked out.
He had originally retired from cycling after his suspension was announced but then decided to mount a comeback in 2009.
Bicycle.net Editorial: Does it not seem like every rider that has been accused of doping, hotly contests that accusation, seems to make their comeback at a Mountainbike race. Why is that? Is it just that the Mountainbiker guys are more tolerant? Do they not care as much? Or is it just that the rules have not been changed to keep them out. No matter what the reason it seems that the “Accused Dopers” are taking advantage, and should have a more difficult time being accepted into the racing ranks.
