2010 TOUR DOWN UNDER RACE ROUTES UNVEILED
The 2010 Tour Down Under race routes have been unveiled today at the official launch of the UCI ProTour event.
Transport Minister Patrick Conlon announced that the route will return to the Clare Valley after a six year absence.
“Stage 1 of the 2010 Tour Down Under will set off from Clare, the first time the event has been to the town,” Minister Conlon says.
“The route will then pass through eight more Clare Valley towns that are new to the Tour Down Under, including Auburn, Saddleworth and Riverton.
“The race will also return to some perennial favourites with the cycling fans, such as Hahndorf, Stirling, Norwood and Willunga.”
After a record-breaking event in 2009, the Tour Down Under is set to light up South Australia from 17-24 January 2010.
“The 2009 Tour Down Under was the biggest in the event’s history, achieving crowds of over three quarters of a million people and providing an economic boost of $39million to the State,” Minister Conlon says.
“The race is now clearly established on the world stage; kicking off the annual UCI ProTour calendar and attracting the best teams and riders to Adelaide each January.
“Not only does the Tour Down Under attract thousands of visitors to South Australia, the resulting television coverage beams footage of our spectacular regions into homes across the globe.”
In 2010, the race routes have been designed to travel from the north to the south of the State during the week of racing.
“This will be great for visitors, who may choose to spend a couple of days in the Clare Valley or Barossa to watch the first stages of the race and then a few days in the Fleurieu Peninsula to watch the later stages,” Minister Conlon says.
“The support from local councils has been integral to the success of the event and I’m sure the regions are looking forward to welcoming the cycling stars and fans next January.”
The launch of the 2010 Tour Down Under race routes coincides with the start of the Tour de France, which begins on Saturday.
“An advertising campaign promoting the Tour Down Under will be aired during SBS’s coverage of the Tour de France,” Minister Conlon says.
“30 riders that competed in the 2009 Tour Down Under will take to the start line in Monaco on Saturday. We wish them the best of luck.
“All Tour de France winners of the last ten years have competed at the Tour Down Under at some time in their career.”
