Bajadali Breaks Scapula in Gila On Stage 1

Carney Shifts Gears to Rethink KBS Plan With Team Leader Down

Minneapolis, Min., April 30th, 2009 — Top KBS climber and recent winner of the Tour of Thailand Andrew Bajadali broke his scapula yesterday at the Tour of Gila. Crashing early in stage one – the Mongolian Road Race – he flies home today to Boulder, Colorado where a doctor will inspect the damage and make recommendations for immediate treatment.

“This is a huge blow to our team,” says Jonas Carney, Performance Director, Kelly Benefit Strategies. “We came to Gila with Baj as the team’s leader. While we have a very strong team we don’t have a lot of altitude guys. It is going to be extremely difficult for us to contest the GC without him – but we will look for other opportunities to make our mark.”

Coming off international wins at the Tour of Thailand and the Vuelta Ciclista del Uruguay in the same week, the Kelly Benefit Strategies team went to Gila with high hopes. Teammates Jake Erker, Alex Candelario, Reid Mumford, Clay Murfet, Dan Bowman, Neil Shirley and Scott Zwizanski now go into stag two shifting gears with Carney calling the shots of a new game plan.

“Baj is one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever met,” adds Carney. “I have no doubt that he will recover quickly and be back leading the team on the climbs in no time. We will know more about his injury and recovery after he is able to see his doctor in Boulder.”
