A major crash took out 20 riders in the peleton. That should help the breakaway stay out in front.

Everybody is back up and back in the race, nobody worse for the wear except for local Andy Jacques Maynes, who is in an ambulance and on his way to a Santa Cruz hospital. Everyone else is back in the peleton. It did provide an opportunity for the breakaway to get farther away.

As the day gets sunnier, everyone is stripping off their winter cloths while they ride and getting for a nice spring ride into Santa Cruz.

Carlos Baredo has broken away from the breakaway, but Levi is killing it coming up from the peleton pursuing the back of the breakaway. Mancedo is nowhere around, so Levi might pick up enough time to strip Rock Racing of the yellow jersey.

Astana let Rock do all the work all day, and now Levi is hunting Mancedo while chasing Baredo. Looks like they’ve closed it up as they crest the hill. Beredo slips to 4th, behind Peterson and McCartney. Levi takes control of the stage and the yellow jersey and only Peterson is sticking with him.
