The third annual Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling will go off in Dana Point, Calif. on Sunday

The 0.8-mile circuit through downtown and Heritage Park has snowballed in popularity, with this year’s event gaining more sponsors than previous years. Even cycling celebrity Floyd Landis has signed up and is expected to race.

Competing against him in the $15,000 men’s professional race will be Chad Gerlach, 35, who has come full circle from being an accomplished professional rider to homeless drug addict to pro cyclist again. Gerlach rode to notoriety as part of strong teams in the late 1990s. An emotional break in 2003 after the slaying of his best friend left Gerlach meandering around Sacramento five years, addicted to drugs and alcohol. Then something changed. After appearing on the show Intervention, Gerlach began working toward sobriety.

The NRC men’s race begins at 4:00 p.m. and the NRC women’s race at 1:00 p.m. A full slate of amateur cycling races will begin at 7 a.m., including public heats, children’s races and more. Cyclists in the pro and public categories will compete for a total of about $30,000 in prize money. Kids will compete for medals and other prizes.

Along with the races, several vendors will offer cycling- and beach-related swag, along with refreshments.

There’s still time to register online at Socalreg.com before 11:59 p.m. Friday. Race registration also will be available Sunday for additional fees.

The Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling is organized by the Dana Point Community Cycling Foundation, a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to promote safe and fun bicycling. Other beneficiaries of event proceeds will be the Boys & Girls Club and the 5th Marine Regiment Support Group.
