LONDON, Nov 26, 2009 (AFP) – Former Olympic skier Alain Baxter is targeting a possible appearance at next year’s Commonwealth Games – but on two wheels.
The 35-year-old Scot, stripped of his shock bronze medal at the 2002 Salt Lake Games for taking a banned substance, is to make his competitive cycling debut in the 200m time trial at the Revolution track cycling event in Manchester next month.
Then he would be in line for a possible Commonwealth Games slot next year.
Flu prevented him from appearing at last month’s national championships but he said Thursday he was raring to go for Manchester.
“Revolution will be my first competitive race, so it’s a bit like entering the unknown,” Baxter said.
“But I’m really excited about it. I’ve been training hard at the sprints and was really disappointed about having to pull out of the nationals.
“This will be my first chance to discover how I measure up against the pros.”
Baxter landed what was Britain’s first ever Olympic Alpine skiing medal but was stripped of the award after he tested positive for banned stimulant methamphetamine, which he took to counter a cold.
