MINSK, June 26, 2009 (AFP) – Former world cycling champion Zinaida Stahurskaya of Belarus died on Thursday after being struck by an out of control car while she was on a training ride, according to her coach.
Vladimir Petchorin, her coach, said Stahurskaya was training on a road near Vitebsk in preparation for the national championships when she was hit by the car.
The 38-year-old, a 2000 world road race champion who was a regular among the women’s professional elite, died at the scene.
According to initial reports the woman driving the car, which came from the opposite direction, had fallen asleep at the wheel.
