Atlanta – Team Type 1’s Aldo Ino Ilesic scored a runner-up finish Sunday in a wind-whipped edition of the BikeJam/Kelly Cup to benefit World Bicycle Relief in Baltimore, Md., while Ian MacGregor won the historic North Boulder Park Criterium in Boulder, Colo.
MacGregor earned his second victory of the year – and the 17th overall for the Team Type 1 men — by beating Jon Tarkington (Natural Grocers Cycling Team presented by XP Companies) and third-place finisher Chris Wherry (Team Hotel San Jose). The North Boulder Park Criterium has previously been a stage in a pair of historic American multi-day races, the Red Zinger and Coors Classic.
Ilesic earned the men’s professional team’s third podium finish in a National Racing Calendar (NRC) event when he was narrowly beaten to the line by Kirk O’Bee (Bissell Pro Cycling). Lucas Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light) was third.
“Today was much better for us,” Team Type 1 Director Sportif Vassili Davidenko said. “I told the guys they did a great job, making sure we always had a guy in every break. Joe (Eldridge) did a nice job today and Mike Creed was busy covering moves.”
Ilesic’s fourth top-three finish of the season came in the 40-lap criterium around a one-mile course in Patterson Park. On Saturday, Ilesic was 13th in Saturday’s Bank of America Wilmington Grand Prix as Ken Hanson scored a team-best seventh place in the 35-mile race. Hanson and teammate Valeriy Kobzarenko figured prominently in a breakaway that stayed clear until the final five laps.
“All the guys did an excellent job up until the final 500 meters when they lost some positioning,” Davidenko said.
The Team Type 1 men and women’s professional teams now look ahead to the Tour of Somerville on Memorial Day. The 20-mile Women’s Kugler Open and the men’s 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial criteriums take place in Somerville, N.J. The team’s primary sponsor, sanofi-aventis, has its U.S. headquarters in nearby Bridgewater N.J.
