The first race of the whole trip was the time trial. I was the 5th rider off out of 35. The Ukrainian winner of the TT World Championship started in front of me, which explained why I never actually saw her
. I was sitting in 4th place for a while, but I ended up in 16th place.
There were about 70 or so riders in the road race. I liked the course, very punchy steep climbs, banked turns, flat/downhill finish. I really put a lot of focus into this race. Unfortunately, out of the 3 Americans(Kendall Ryan, Jessica Prinner, and myself) I was the only person who made the front group, while everyone else in the front group had a teammate. But either way I was grateful to even be in the front group. When the attacks started to come I was able to respond, but the 1 that I really needed to follow I missed. It is difficult to cover all the moves on my own, but I had to do what I had to do. When the break of 2 Italians, 1 French, and 1 Russian gained 1minute on the last lap I had to try to make one last move to bridge to the group. I attacked hard and got somewhat of a gap, but the italians would not let me go. I looked back and they were chasing hard, but I kept driving. They caught me on the next climb and attacked me and I went off the back of the group. When I reached the top of the climb Missy was standing there yelling at me to get accross NOW or else I’ll never see them again. I put my head down again and dug deep to catch them before the next climb. When I finally caught them I started seeing stars after the amout of efforts I had to do. I took a gel(courtesy of Tim Brennan:) ) and tried to get ready for the final sprint. By the time we got there I was done, I tried to get out of the saddle, but it got me no where, so I rolled into the finish for 20th.
I had one day to recover for track racing. The first event being the pursuit. Perfect. I decided that I wasnt recovered enough for the pursuit, so I used it as an opener for the omnium. I finished in 21st.
Next was the omnium. I had a 200m, scratch race, and 1.5km pursuit in the morning session. And a points race and 500m in the evening. I finished 8th in the 200m. 4th in the scratch. 7th in the 1.5km pursuit, 6th in the points race, and 6th in the 500m. And I ended up in 6th overall.
I had high hopes of going back home with a rainbow jersey, but that obviously didn’t happen. But only being 16 and my first year at a world championship I am still happy with how everything turned out. I am really competitive, so not getting a rainbow jersey is upsetting, but I will eventually turn it into something great.
