HTC-Columbia’s Judith Arndt has won the Giro della Toscana in Italy on Sunday. Arndt had a problem-free ride on the final stage from Quarrata to Firenze to claim her first overall stage race win since she took the Bira in Spain in June 2009.
Second was Russia’s Tatiana Antoshina, with HTC-Columbia’s Noemi Cantele in third.
“I’m pleased I’ve won, but what’s really nice is that HTC-Columbia has held the leader’s jersey from beginning to end, in our last race as a team this season,” Arndt said. “First it went to Ina [Yoko Teutenberg] then Noemi had it and finally I got it. Yesterday I wasn’t aiming to move into the lead, I was defending Noemi’s lead in the breaks, and I had to go with the moves. As a result of that, I ended up in the lead myself.”
Arndt said that with her final objective of the season, the World Championships, coming up fast, an overall stage race win was more than encouraging and a sign of rising form.
“It’s my first in over a year, I’ve had a lot of second places so this is a good moment for me. At the same time that the riders here with HTC-Columbia are going to to the World’s, so it’s nice to see that everybody’s in good shape and ready for that, too.”
