San Dimas, California – Showing that his preparation is right on track Ben Day rode the Glendora Mountain Road time trial with precision to take the win and fire the first bullet towards the overall general classification. The Glendora Mountain Road could not be described as flat and for the most part is a climb from start to finish. With knowledge of the course and by starting last and knowing the times to beat, Ben did just that. Ben’s winning margin was 5 seconds and now leads the tour heading into tomorrow’s second stage.
Ben said, “Today was awesome to be back amongst the team, with the pressure of racing all around us. We have been looking forward to our official US kickoff for a while now and I’m ecstatic to be able to back up my win from last year at the San Dimas stage race prologue. There were some great rides behind me so I am sure that they will do their best to make a race of this tour, but my team is incredibly strong right now and they will do the job in the next two days. Great way to start the season, but this is just the start of many things to come. Onwards and upwards.”
With the yellow jersey firmly on his back, Ben Day will need to marshal his Fly V australia team mates to defend his lead heading into tomorrow’s 64 kilometer road race. From there the race heads to the Stage 3 Old Town criterium.
Expected challenges from United Health Care, Jamis, Bissel, TT1, Jelly Belly and Bahati racing should make for a challenging and interesting two days of racing.
