It was a very good day for the Fly V Australia, and their star sprinter Jonathan Cantwell who won the Dana Point Grand Prix today. Cantwell took the bunch sprint today in the criterium today besting some of the best USA sprinters around. Going into the last lap Cantwell was well placed sitting at 4th wheel behind the UnitedHealthcare sprint train, until about halfway through the lap where Jamis-Sutter Home went to the front and drove the train through the final corner. Cantwell really hit the pedals hard coming out of the last corner and never slowed down until he crossed the line first, with Alejandro Borrajo (Jamis-Sutter Home) and his brother Anibal Borrajo (Jamis-Sutter Home) taking 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The start of the race was an emotional moment had by all. In honor of Jorge Alvarado (Bahati Foundation), who was killed on Thursday by a driver who was drag racing, Rahsaan Bahati went to front and hammered the pace to lead the first few laps. It was an honor that did not go noticed. Dave Towle who was announcing described as “Bahati is giving Jorge Alvarado a lead out to Heaven.” Well said Dave.

With three laps to go their was a big crash taking out in the front third of the peloton which among others took out Rahsaan Bahati (Bahati Foundation) who was a crowd favorite. The crash happened within the 5 laps to go, so there was no free laps and all involved were out of contention. With riders involved in the crash still on the course the officials slowed the now reduced pack (40 or so riders) so that they could get by without any more harm. Bahati showed his frustration by throwing his sun glasses at a rider still in the peloton. Bahati Twittred teh following “Jake Keogh from UHC crashed me. What’s more disappointing is his Director condoned it. My actions were childish & I apologize to everyone.”

Cantwell was motivated and was still pushing hard, “I just told my guys and UnitedHealthcare to keep going,” said Cantwell.

“Coming into the final corner, Jamis-Sutter Home took over and I jumped onto their wheel and had the legs today.”
