PARIS – British cyclist Mark Cavendish and Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara, two riders riding for the title in the next road world championship (October 3), arrived in Australia, organizers said Thursday.
“Everybody says it’s not really a course built for sprinters but it is a race that is up my alley. I’m not the favorite, but I can win,” he said on arrival Cavendish, winner This year five stages of the Tour de France and three stages of the Vuelta.
“Cav”, who said he felt “really strong” out of the Vuelta, however, said he had a better idea of the route of Geelong, near Melbourne, after riding it in person.
The British had already won in Australia, where in 2006 he took the gold medal at the scratch of the Commonwealth Games.
As for Cancellara, the three times world champion against the clock (2006, 2007, 2009) he said he would await the outcome of the Championships before deciding his future and pending departure from team Saxo Bank.
