MADRID – Spain’s triple Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has hurt his knee after falling while training near Madrid, his spokesperson revealed on Tuesday.

Contador, who decided not to participate in the Tour of Spain (August 28-September 19), slipped on a puddle of oil at a roundabout on the outskirts of Pinto, his home town.

The spokesperson added that Contador was able to return home on his bike but will now have to observe a period of rest after his knee became swollen.

The 27-year-old won his third Tour de France with Astana this summer but will ride for Saxo Bank from next season onwards.
