Italian veteran cyclist Stefano Garzelli retired from the Tour of Italy during Saturday’s 20th and penultimate stage because of injuries suffered on Friday.
The 36-year-old Acqua and Sapone rider, who won the Tour of Italy in 2000, won the time-trial stage earlier in the week, but gave up after the 59th kilometer of the 178km stage with a sore right knee and hip which he injured when he fell on the descent from Montirolo.
Spain’s Xavier Tondo, a key lieutenant of compatriot and 2008 Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, also retired during the stage at the beginning of the 2315 meters climb to Forcola di Livigno.
