American Tyler Farrar (Garmin) Wednesday won the Grand Prix of the Scheldt, the sprint, beating Australian Robbie McEwen at the end of 205.4 km in the disputed region Antwerp (northern Belgium).
The platoon, behind which was the Swiss Fabian Cancellara, winner Sunday of the Tour of Flanders, took over in the final group of seven escaped.
Belgian Tom Boonen, second in “Dance” on Sunday, launched the sprint distance. Finding himself overwhelmed by the left and the right McEwen by Farrar, the Belgian champion got up to tens of meters from the finish in Schoten.
Farrar 5th in the Tour of Flanders and one of the best sprinters in the peloton, McEwen beat out the line, 12 years her senior, and the German Robert Förster.
