Jens Voigt First In Volta A Catalunya

Team Saxo Bank’s Jens Voigt secured yet another victory for the Danish team.

Twice, the peloton passed the climb, Alt de Paumeres before descending to the finish line in Ascó on today’s 209 kilometer long fourth stage of Volta a Catalunya where Team Saxo Bank’s Lucas Sebastian Haedo took off early with six other riders and formed the longest lasting break of the stage. Vladimir Efimkim (Ag2R) was the best-placed rider in the GC where he before the stage was 2.32 minutes behind the leader’s jersey in 40th position.

The breakaway hit the first climb with a lead of 2.47 minutes to the chasing peloton but the categorized climb was no feast for the younger Haedo-brother who let go of the group along with Tomas Vaitkus (Radioshack).

Early on the second climb, Team Saxo Bank’s Jens Voigt launched an attack and soon joined the breakaway where Vladimir Efimkim (Ag2R) only shortly was able to follow the German’s pace who soon took the lead of the race. In usual Voigt-style, the Team Saxo Bank-rider fought intensely to keep the chasing pack behind before passing the top of the mountain and soon he took on the descent with a rapid pack of favorites in his tail.

Less than 18 kilometers to go, Roman Kreuziger and Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis) closed the gap and the trio now worked together in order to reach the finish line ahead of the peloton. Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) was dropped within the final 10 kilometers and entering the last 4 kilometers, the Voigt-Taaramäe-duo had 20 a 20 second lead to the peloton.

On the finish line, Jens Voigt demonstrated cleverness and raw power by outsprinting his young opponent and took an amazing stage win.
