Roman Kilun of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis has returned strong from a hip fracture sustained at the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic in June, winning a pair of California state track titles this weekend.
“I’ve been back racing on and off the past month,” he said, “but only started to feel good the past week.”
He displayed those good sensations at the Hellyer Velodrome in San Jose, winning the Individual Pursuit title, and then the Madison title along with Michael Hernandez.
“We weren’t planning on racing the Madison, but they asked us to start it because they wanted a few more teams racing it,” Kilun said. “We really weren’t going into it looking to win. We didn’t contest the first couple sprints so later in the race when guys were starting to get tired, we were still pretty fresh. At one point, we went hard and got a gap and just kept driving it and eventually lapped the field.”
