OBRA, ACA & ATRA have grown the sport of bicycle racing completely without USA Cycling assistance, i.e., interference. I founded California Bicycle Racing (CBR) to grow the sport of bicycle racing in California. While mainly in Southern California, CBR issues permits anywhere (our bike race insurance is nationwide). USA Cycling is focused on one thing: making money and finding the next Pharmstrong. No amount of local funds will be spared in paying USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson’s $200,000/yr salary to make decisions that violate their non-profit charter. USA Cycling refuses to recognize CBR races while they concurrently recognize OBRA, ACA & ATRA races. USA Cycling is a national organization but are discriminating against CBR locally. They do this because they are losing marketshare in So Cal, and their priority is to make money: through race promoters, race insurance and race prize list taxes (most bike races are taxed an extra 7% of the total race purse in addition to other fees). This is not how a non-profit should operate, and a non-profit should NEVER try to put a similar non-profit out of business. Can anyone imagine the Sierra Club trying to bankrupt Greenpeace? Can anyone imagine the US Humane Society trying to put the ASPCA out of business? USA Cycling refuses to explain why they allow OBRA, ACA & ATRA races to count towards USA Cycling amateur upgrades but not CBR. It is my hope that you, the local cycling enthusiast, can either acquire an answer from Mr. Johnson or request that he cease this discrimination immediately. Inform him that if he doesn’t immediately comply with the non-profit charter of growing the sport of bicycle racing, that you will contact the US internal Revenue Service and request that they investigate USA Cycling’s non-profit charter to determine that if it should remain tax-exempt while its business practices look similar to a monopoly solely focused on having no competition in the marketplace.
