Sun Life Financial Partners with Miami Dolphins to Tackle Cancer One Mile at a Time Through Dolphins Cycling Challenge
Leading Financial Services Organization Supports Two-day, 170-mile Trans-Florida Ride to Benefit University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
Miami (November 19, 2010) – Sun Life Financial Inc. (NYSE: SLF, TSX: SLF) today announced that it will partner with the Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC), a two-day, tri-county charity cycling event coordinated by the Miami Dolphins Foundation and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The DCC, which benefits the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, will be held on November 20 and 21.
“We’re thrilled to work with the Miami Dolphins to better the lives of South Florida residents and people from all over the world by supporting the inaugural Dolphins Cycling Challenge,” said Sun Life Financial Senior Vice President, Head of U.S. Marketing Priscilla Brown. “Sun Life Financial is firmly committed to supporting the communities in which we operate and we are proud to support the great work of the Sylvester Cancer Center, an organization that is on the front lines in the battle against this horrible disease which affects so many.”
The first-annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge was created to increase cancer awareness, encourage healthy activity among residents of South Florida, and raise critically important funds for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Since its inception in 1992, Sylvester has transformed cancer research and treatment in South Florida and beyond.
“When we announced our stadium partnership in January, Sun Life pledged to make cause-related initiatives a major cornerstone of their sponsorship program,” said Miami Dolphins CEO Mike Dee. “Sun Life’s support of the Dolphins Cycling Challenge is yet another manifestation of that vision and we couldn’t be happier to work with a partner that is so willing to support worthy causes in our community.”
Sun Life will serve as presenting sponsor of the DCC Kids Ride, during which children ages three to 13 will ride age-appropriate routes at Sun Life Stadium. Sun Life representatives will join Miami Dolphins’ staff to select Kids Ride participants who will serve as Sun Life Community Captains. These lucky youth, chosen for their outstanding efforts to make a difference in their respective communities, will have the opportunity to meet former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas and be honored at a special pre-game ceremony on December 5 when the Miami Dolphins take on the Cleveland Browns.
In addition to its financial support, Sun Life is awarding five Dolphins away-game travel packages to exceptional DCC riders who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to ensuring the event’s success. Packages include two tickets to a Dolphins away game, round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations. The recipients of the away-game packages will also be recognized during the December 5 pre-game ceremony at Sun Life Stadium.
Earlier this fall, Sun Life partnered with the Miami Dolphins to recognize and provide resources to high school students who have overcome the odds and remained committed to furthering their education and the nonprofit organizations who work on their behalf through the Sun Life Rising Star Awards. The program, a cornerstone of the Miami Dolphins Foundation, gave more than $1,000,000 in grants and scholarships in 2010, of which $200,000 was awarded in Florida alone.
