Sprinter Greipel Leads German Team For Cycling Worlds

BERLIN – Sprinter Andre Greipel will head the German team for the September 29-October 3 road cycling world championships in Australia, the German cycling federation announced Wednesday.

Greipel will be partnered by three team-mates from his Columbia professional cycling team.

The 36-year-old Lampre rider Danilo Hondo, who was suspended between 2005-8 for doping, will help prep Greipel for the sprint event.

However, neither Milram’s Gerald Ciolek nor Linus Gerdemann (Milram) and Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank) were included in the team.

German medal chances will likely come from the time-trial specialists, 2009 bronze medalist Tony Martin and 2008 world champion Bert Grabsch.

“It won’t be easy to beat someone like (Fabien) Cancellara, but we should come back with a medal,” said federation vice-president Udo Sprenger.
