HTC-COLUMBIA’S TEUTENBERG TAKES CONTROL IN CHINA’S TOP STAGE RACE

San Luis Obispo, CA – 5th May 2010 – Victory for HTC-Columbia rider Ina-Yoko Teutenberg in the opening stage of the Tour of Chongming Island in China has netted the German sprint star both her eighth win of the season and the first lead in the three-day race.

Teutenberg crossed the line ahead of Kirsten Wild of Holland in the bunch sprint which decided the opening day’s racing, a 72.5 kilometre loop starting and finishing in Chongbei.

With two sprint bonuses snapped up by Teutenberg during the stage, the HTC-Columbia rider now leads by six seconds overall.

“I’m very pleased to have won in a bunch sprint,” Teutenberg said later “because after a three week break racing from racing it’s always hard to tell if you’ll have the speed. It was a good day for the whole team, too – everybody had good legs, even [team-mate] Kim Anderson who just landed in China from the US last night.

“Judith [Arndt] was in a breakaway early on and then Ellen [Van Dijk] and Kim [Anderson] were in moves towards the end but it all came together for a bunch sprint.”
“Chloe [Hosking] came up to the front with 500 metres to go and kept the pace really high, and that was the perfect move for me to get into position.”

Riding for the first time in China, Teutenberg said the terrain made for a different kind of racing experience compared to Europe or the USA.

“The roads were wide open, the surfaces brand new and really smooth and the course dead flat. I think there were only ten corners in the whole race, which is slightly different to an event we did in Holland last week where there were seven corners in one lap and we did 50 laps in total!”

Tomorrow’s stage is 79.8 kilometres, finishing in Chongnix, and is also expected to end in a bunch sprint.

“We’ll try our best to defend the lead” Teutenberg said, “I’m looking forward to it.”
