The season is well under way and I have experienced a mixed bag so far. There has been a lot going on inside the cycling bubble! Not least of which, I have spent the last 10 days at or above 5000ft… and topping out at around 7500ft at the Tour of the Gila. I headed East from my San Diego home to do a little road trip with my team mate, Taylor Kneuven, and hit up Bisbee and Gila for some bike practice and altitude training. The idea was to go to Bisbee and use it to acclimate for Gila…… Ideas are great! Execution was another story. I felt good to start with at Bisbee, but the cold was hurting me a bit, ( I must be getting old and soft from living in SoCal!) then as we progressed to Gila the combination of the Altitude and the mountain terrain, which I am not great at in the first place, decided to slowly kick my arse… it didn’t just hit me all of a sudden, it was more like a slow, creeping up from behind and draining all my resources kinda feeling. Basically, I was breathing through a straw and not putting enough force down in the pedals. Not to mention some blokes called Lance and Levi dictating the pace of the event. Maybe I should have headed to the South East and done the Speedweek series, with my other team mate, Austin Carroll???? This altitude training better pay off!
I am back at sea level and taking long full breaths! It’s great, and hopefully my condition will pick up in the coming weeks and I can get a few runs on the board.
Cheers,
Cody
