The Tour of Saxony Canceled

The Tour of Saxony cycling race will not occur in 2010 due to financing problems, said the organizer on Friday. The Tour of Saxony is a stage race that was first run in 1985.

“We can not fund the running of the race for five stages,” said Friedemann Wolfgang, the director of the 2009 event which was won by Germany’s Patrik Sinkewitz.

The organizer hopes to revive the race in July 2011.

The cancellation of the Tour of Saxony is another blow for the German professional cycling, which is still reeling after three years of high-profile doping cases (Ulrich, Schumacher) the loss of two professional teams (T-Mobile, Gerolsteiner) and tests such as the Tour of Germany.
