Saxo Bank-SunGard’s Alberto Contador showed his magnificent class on third stage of the Tour d’Algarve as he sped away from the field on the final climb over the last five kilometers and finished the stage in third position.
Prior to the attack, the Saxo Bank-SunGard team took control of the pace of peloton which made the leader, Philippe Gilbert (Lotto) drop from the bunch early on the climb. Then Saxo Bank-SunGard captain, Alberto Contador launched an attack which made the main group collapse. However, Stephen Cummings (Sky) and three other riders were able to follow and the Sky-rider took the stage win – six seconds ahead of the second group.
Saxo Bank-SunGard Spaniard, Alberto Contador has won the race the previous two years and he is now second overall – only six seconds behind Stephen Cummings (Sky).
