Greipel To Make Milan-San Remo Debut

PARIS, March 15, 2011 – German sprinter Andre Greipel is set to make
his Milan-SanRemo debut despite being forced to pull out of Tirreno-Adriatico
earlier this week due to injuries sustained in a crash, his Omega Pharma team
said Tuesday.

Milan-SanRemo is one of only five cycling ‘monuments’ and is the first big
one-day classic of the season.

With 298 km to cover from Milan to SanRemo next Saturday, Greipel has been
potentially handicapped by not being able to finish Tirreno, won Tuesday by
Australia’s Cadel Evans.

However the German plans to top up his race preparation by competing in a
one-day race in Nokere, Belgium in midweek.

“If all goes well, Andre will start (in Milan),” said team manager Marc
Sergeant.

Belgian Philippe Gilbert, who won the final one-day classic of 2010 — the
Tour of Lombardy — remains another option for the Belgian outfit having
finished three times in the top ten in SanRemo since 2005.

The four other monuments are: Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix,
Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Tour of Lombardy.
