GRINDELWALD, Switzerland, June 13, 2011 (AFP) – Italian Christiano Salerno
suffered a suspected broken collarbone following a crash on the third stage of
the Tour of Switzerland, organizers said Monday.
Salerno, of Liquigas, crashed on the descent of the Grosse Scheidegg, the
second of two climbs on the 106km stage whose summit sits 10km above
Grindelwald in the shadow of the Eiger and Jungfrau mountains.
He was taken to hospital in nearby Interlaken for scans, organisers said.
Consolation for Liquigas came in the shape of a stage win for Slovakian
Peter Sagan, who admitted that seeing his stricken teammate had spurred him on.
“Salerno was in front of me but I didn’t see his crash, I just saw him
lying on the ground,” said Sagan, who beat new race leader Damiano Cunego in a
two man dash for the finish line.
“That’s when I said to myself I had to risk everything to try and catch
Cunego.”
