So I am not known for my Cavendish like finishing sprint, in fact I am not known for much more than a pack finish.
But this season I have changed all that. I know what you are thinking. It goes something like this – What The Hell!!!!! How can Mr. Pack Fodder be anything else? It all happened when a Mr. Chris Lotts (of CBR glory) decided to create the Master 40+ 4/5 race category. Not only did it fit me full bulls eye, but if I could not compete with a bunch of old and slow geezers like myself than where and when?
I throw all caution aside, put life on the line, drowned out the pleas of my wife, and decided to at least semi contest a sprint here and there.
Now I have to say I miss being pack fodder. It is easy and no one calls you out very often for doing something stupid like not keeping your line in the last 200 meters.
But I broke from the comfort of the bosom of the pack, and actually tried to sprint. And it seems that my skinny little shaved legs are pretty much good for 19th place. You see, I have gotten 19th three times in races so far, with one 17th, and one 11th. But I am most impressed with my 19th places because I actually had to fight for them. Like going to the front of the arrow and take on the wind for ½ a lap.
So here is to being old and slow. And the never better 19th place (which I guess still makes me Pack Fodder), but please don’t bring me down until 9/11/11 when I will go for my 4th 19th place in one short season.
